Fabrizio Maggi is M.D., graduated from the University of Pisa, Specialist in Microbiology and Virology, Ph.D. in Clinical and Fundamental Virology at the University of Pisa. He is the Director of the Department of Epidemiology, Preclinical Research and Advanced Diagnostics and Head of the Laboratory of Virology and Laboratories of Biosecurity at the Spallanzani National Institute for Infectious Diseases, Rome. He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Medicine and Technological Innovation of the University of Insubria. He was Head of the Division of Microbiology, ASST Settelaghi, and Director of the Specialization School in Microbiology and Virology at the University of Insubria. He had awards for research on HIV from the ANLAIDS Association, Unesco, and the International Foundation for AIDS Research and for research on HIV from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità. He held teaching courses in Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology for medical, master, and PhD students at the University of Insubria. His main interest is in the natural history, pathogenesis, and genetic characterization of emerging and re-emerging viruses and the development of methods for viral diagnosis. Additional areas of research include hepatitis C virus, human immunodeficiency virus, and diagnostic virology. He is a member of various scientific societies and international study groups; he is the Italian member of the Global Health Security Action Group Laboratory Network, a WHO expert in the SARS-CoV-2 laboratory network, a member of the Italian group for the elaboration of the Ministry of Health’s National Defense Plan, an expert member of the Foreign Ministry’s Global Partnership Working Group, a member of the experts’ group of the Ministry of Health’s PanFlu laboratory and a member of the technical-scientific committee of the parliamentary intergroup “One Health." He serves as a referee/editor for several international scientific journals and has published over 300 papers in refereed scientific journals.
