Prior Art Search

Prior art searches are preliminary checks that should be conducted before starting the patent filing process. They are aimed both at tracing existing documents that could invalidate a new patent application and at checking the basic patentability requirements (novelty and inventive step) of an inventive solution.
The analysis of prior documents can provide valuable insights, including:

  • The existence of prior intellectual property rights, so as to avoid ineffective investments in patent filing;
  • Technical solutions that might be advantageous or free to use after lapse of related rights;
  • Competitors’ technologies;
  • Opportunities for licensing, partnerships, and collaborations.

What Will a Researcher Gain from a Prior Art Search?

The IP&M Helpdesk will perform prior art searches based on documents and information provided by the inventors. At the end of the analysis, the researcher will receive a report containing:
  • Details on the search strategy and methodology;
  • Overview of potential similarities or conflicts with existing patents;
  • Considerations on possible protection strategies.

Researchers can use such information to refine or actualize their invention and assess its potential market interest.
